An In(Ac)cident

Posted at 10:50 AM on September 25, 2007 in Life.

Thought I would share with you all an in(ac)cident that happened on our bus journey from Pondy to Chennai (Vaithi, one of my closest friend was with me too)

That was during the Government Bus Driver's strike for bonus in Jayalalitha's period and we did not have any usual buses to Pondicherry.
Somehow we managed to get into the already overcrowded buses and reached pondy.

On the return Journey Vaithi and I boarded a bus around 6.30 AM in Pondicherry bus stand. The driver was actually a local driver and had no knowledge of the route to take to go to chennai.
We the passengers had to guide him on how to reach the ECR road from bus stand.
After that since  it is a single road the passengers felt safe and went to sleep including our Vaithi.
I was however as usual reading something and enjoying the morning breeze.
To my surprise and shock the driver was flying in the ECR road at a very high speed and overtook 3 buses that had left Pondy bustand atleast 40 minutes ago.
ECR as you might be knowing is full of terrible twists and turns. In one such turn this guy could not control the bus and hit the guidance pillar on the edge of the road.
Immediately he tried to steer the bus and in the process hit a cyclist, jumped out of the road and on to the field.
Still the bus was well over 50 km/hour and that is when the comedy happened.
Vaithi woke up to the noise around him. People were shouting "Ayyayo Ayyayo", "Dei Niruthuda Paavi"  and the best one "Enna Kolla Paakuraan" (meaning he is trying to kill me)
I think only Vaithi and I were calm and I was in fact thinking what I should do if the bus topples.
But the driver was good enough to stop finally on top of a mound.
Immediately the people started hitting him and one girl was saying that she was bringing her friend with her (as if otherwise she was ok to die)

But the fun did not end here. We went to see what happened to the cyclist. He was bleeding but not badly hit.
And we were wondering why they are not taking him to hospital. Then we understood that it was a village and they were waiting for their NATTAMAI (village head)
But the funiest thing was when we saw the NATTAMAI coming in a bicycle. He stopped and again they started discussing on what to do.
Meanwhile the person who was bleeding started to cry.
Finally someone went to bring an auto nearby.

We then got another bus, paid the fare again and came all the way standing in that crowded bus.
I will never forget this and whenever I think of it, I can't resist laughing. Vaithi does too I think
