As a huge fan of the books, I was anticipating that it would be made into a movie someday, right after I finished reading it in the early 1990s. Even back then Maniratnam was trying to do it with Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth (what a treat that would have been). After that whenever the rumour resurfaced, I was always ready for the ensuing disappointment. In 2020, when I heard the news that Mani had started shooting it rekindled the fire only to be put off by Corona news few months later. But Mani was a patient sculptor I guess and …

So, in a regular conversation I was asked the meaning of this tamil word in english as it comes in a tamil song and I didn’t know. That prompted me to look for the meaning and I found that the lyricist Vairamuthu (one of the best) had taken it from Tamil literature and hence the difficulty. It means “This is not fair”. Like, I came looking for you in the skies and you went deep in the ocean and when I came there you went back to the high skies and made me search all around a forest of stars …

An excellent low budget movie that does not depend on sleaze and cheap songs for its success. Kudos to Jyothika and Surya for pulling this off.

If you have ever read my previous posts on religious views, you would know how strongly I am opposed to religion and religious practices (religion not god) and when a film comes by which portrays exactly the principles inside you, what is there to not like. The film was the need of the hour with lots of violence happening in the name of religion. The best dialogue in the movie comes at the end “People are not god-loving, they are god-fearing”. How true. How many of us think God as a friend. Often the portrayal is of a master-slave relationship. …

The film is fun and made me laugh aloud a lot of times with its excellent comedy. The songs are amazing. My favorite was ‘Behete Hawa..’ but who can stop singing ‘All izz Well’. Aamir and co have acted well. Aamir does justice to a college going student look. The social message is good and Aamir should be praised for the way he handles such subjects. A strong message in a beautifully sugar coated movie. The film is not without its share of, shall we call it cinematic loopholes. I don’t understand what is a professor to do if his students …

It was the interval and munching some pop corns I was thinking that this film is the best attempted in Tamil Cinema to match a world class quality in action and adventure and also one of the finest films I have seen and there could be nothing in the second half that can take this away from such a superb film – unfortunately, I was wrong. The film starts off and never once misses its pace for the entire long first half. That is a credible thing. Most of the people would be amazed by the attention to detail, the …

Rehman did India proud by winning double Oscars at the 81st Academy Awards. I was up at 6.30 and even without brushing my teeth was in front of T.V. Shortly my wife joined me and we were glued to it till 10.30 A.M jumping on various occasions first for Resul Pookutty, then for Rehman and also for Pinky. Finally it was a moment of great joy and pride to see the kids and the caste of Slumdog Millionaire for the Best Picture.

After the super duper hit ‘Sivaji’ it has now been confirmed (ET and Rediff) that Rajni and Shankar are teaming up for ‘Robot’ (name might change later). The only thing that made me sad was that I was expecting Kamal to do it. But Rajni has his own class and let us hope that this turns out to be the best hit ever in India. It will be a science fiction movie costing a whooping 100 crores (costliest movie in India) and is said to be the dream movie of Shankar. I am damn sure that writer ‘Sujatha’ will be …
