Atomic Habits

Self help books are usually not my cup of tea. I have tried a few and absolutely not liked them (sorry fans of ‘The Alchemist’). But there are some on the right side of rationality while also being helpful with some day to day stuff and ‘Atomic Habits’ is one such book. It feels well researched and actually gives practical suggestions that could work. Moreover the tone of the book is more of opening up the knowledge instead of taking the “I know everything, now listen to me” attitude. I also like that it touches upon difficult topics like “genetics” and “luck” without shutting them off like they are non-existent.

The dissestion of how a habit is formed and sustained is pretty thorough. The cue -> craving -> response -> reward sytem is made amply clear and the book suggests how to attack each part in a number of ways thereby promoting good habits and getting rid of the bad ones. Even is someone is not ready to follow everything written here, there are some gems that can be used as short cuts for a significant change. It is also very much possible that you are already doing certain things today without realizing that it is part of a bigger picture of habit formation and the book puts them in perspective. Habits are more powerful than we might think. We are nothing but a product of our habits and if we can tweak some of our building blocks to make ourselves better, then why not.
